Rocko’s Modern Life
Rocko’s Modern Life was one of my favorite cartoons, more than Ren and Stimpy as much as I gushed about that recently. It probably didn’t have as much impact on my art as Ren and Stimpy, but I think it had more impact on my sense of humor. I love how it turned the mundane into the absurd, a type of humor I still enjoy. In my opinion shows like Regular Show owe a lot to Rocko and that style of humor. Rocko still holds up very well today. It’s the only Nicktoon I decided to buy on DVD. It’s smart, wacky, subversive and still very funny. More than I can say for a lot of the shows I grew up loving and have tried to rewatch as an adult. I wanted to do a take on Rocko in the intro when he’s losing his mind (literally). Rocko embraced the fact that it’s a cartoon and went big with reactions like this, and I loved it. Rocko was one of the characters I drew regularly as a kid.
